This is a very old illustration of a long gone D&D game. The Darkling or "Pholcahr" is a hulking 8 foot shape of manifest darkness emanating insanity and cold. When it passes the ground freezes in a ten meter radius. It's robes move and billow and when they call open pure darkness can be glimpsed inside. The Pholcahr wields heavy crushing weapons, does not communicate, but can "grab" humanoid and other targets, pull them its robes and deposit them in an adjacent dimension of manifest despair and cold. Those humanoids then emerge, some time later, as a less class undead, generally socalled "Whrest" or "Whrestlings" but Pholcahr can also create other undead by design as many have full powers of a Master Necromancer. Phoulcahr die from direct sunlight so generally move on overcast days, or underground. Pholcahr are actively hunted by most species of Dragons, and are in a state of total war with both the Kingdom of Vampire Lords as well as the Kingdom of Mankind. Classially they are a deep hue of malignant evil, and they are quite intelligent.
